REVIEW : The Story of Us by Barbara Elsborg

42645127Two boys. One love. Ten summers.

Are you okay?
The first words Zed says to Caspian, and the first time someone has cared about the answer. On a hot summer’s day, the lives of two boys are changed forever. A rebel and a risk taker, Caspian doesn’t give a damn for the consequences. Studious and obedient, Zed is the good boy who is never good enough.

The two couldn’t be more different, but there’s one thing they share, a need to belong to someone who understands them, someone who cares. Their friendship goes deeper than either can possibly imagine. They’re young, in love, and planning their future when an act of betrayal tears them apart.

Fate deals its hand. Seasons pass. Zed’s words follow Caspian through pain, fear and into the darkest of places. Friendships can last a lifetime, even when the world conspires to crush them. But this is more than friendship. This is love and they’re not going to let it slip through their fingers.

Warning
The Story of Us is a tale of love and survival, and the triumph of good over evil against the odds. It's a new adult contemporary romance that deals with family and social issues. There is violence and cruelty to children but not sexual assault. The story has sexual situations, dark elements and suspense. The events and locations are a mixture of real and fictional. The characters are fictional

Buddy read with Zane Kage.

This is our story. We can make it whatever we want it to be.

Young love is rarely stay forever. However, Zed and Caspian made it happen, but not without shred their blood, literally.
I love reading about young love, but you know about my feeling about their tortured life in books, or wherever in reality. My heart is always bleeding.

I'm a muslim myself, I know some people (many of them), who has view Islam like Zed's father. Alhamdulillah I was raised in Indonesia in my young age, where Islam mingled with local tradition, not Arabic tradition. My mom and dad, I thank them forever, who raised me as a modern muslim, so my view of Islam is different. I play piano, singing, not wearing hijab, my son's gay.
And my parents didn't blink an eye for that.
Enough about me.

Felt sorry for Zed for his life, but mostly for Caspian for what he had been trough to reach his happiness. I believed that some people need more punishment in this story. But Caspian was young, very young, and thinking with his young pride, stubbornness, and less of logic.
I'm happy for Zed, he found Henry and Jonas after what happened in London, for the love he had given by them, unconditionally.
But Caspian...sigh, poor baby Caspian, a rich boy, to a con, then nobody after. :(
This author tortured me with how much angst, after angst, after angst, after angst, I kept holding my breath until the last part, just prepared myself for another twist. And I keep reading this author's books, and I will be, in the future.

I recommend this book for everyone to read, this was so good, heartbreaking even, but sure this author knew how to mend a broken heart.
Thumbs up!

Can true love warm his frozen heart?

When Casey Stevens went away to college four years ago, he ghosted on his straight best friend, Joel Vreeland. He hoped time and distance would lessen the unrequited affection he felt, but all it did was make him miss Joel more. Home for the holidays, Casey hopes they might find a way to be friends again. But Joel’s frosty reception reminds Casey of just how hard he had to fight to be Joel’s friend in the first place. It’s going to take a Christmas miracle to get past that cool façade again.

Joel isn’t as straight as Casey believes, and his years of pining for Casey have left him hurting and alone, caring for his abusive father and struggling to get by. Unable to trust anyone except his rescue dog— and with no reason to believe Casey is interested in him for more than a holiday fling—Joel’s icy heart might shatter before it can thaw.

Can Casey and Joel’s love overcome mistrust, parental rejection, class differences, and four long years apart? Mr. Frosty Pants is a stand-alone, Christmas gay romance by Leta Blake featuring a virgin hero, childhood friends-to-lovers, second chance romance, and steamy mm first times.

I was just realized that this is my second book from this author. I read Any Given Lifetime, and I loved it. So I read this book with high expectation, hoping this as good as AGL.
It was good in the beginning, but then, I found so much angst in this story that made me upset.
I didn't sit well with so much angst in my holiday story. Supposed it should be fun, right? With a healthy portion of angst (Read : none of very low). This is a holiday season after all.
But instead, I found such homophobic abuse, domestic abuse. By parents. And Casey and Joey didn't have power to speak up at the moment. They were kids, after all.
I liked Casey, but Joel exhausted me a lot. This story, in fact, exhausting.
Not that this wasn't good, if you are a fan of Leta Blake, I believe this one will excited you, and loved it.
I think this time, this story was not for me. I read two books. One hit, one miss.
I'll still read some of this author's other books in the future, hoping I can find another gem.
Like I said earlier, if you are a fan, you won't miss this one!

I met Jed and Max in Circle, then I realized I hadn't read Only Love, the book about those two amazing people in Pete and Ash life.
I really liked the idea of two people with some disabilities together, not easy, but many times it works.
It's also worked with Max and Jed after Jed moved to the cabin.
Many things happened, but Max and Jed destined to be together since the first time they met.
This is a long book, with both Jed and Max everyday struggled, with their past especially.
I really like what Max said to Jed after he went to Paul's service....

..."There's no past tense when you lose someone, Jed. You just keep on loving them.""

Yeah they had tortured past life, both of them, and they survived. That's all what matter, right?

After ruining his chances with Sebastian, Meik is plagued by the past and haunted by the present. His escape: booze and sex. But the memories of Gabe continuously well up and never ebb. They become an ever-present companion he cannot escape.

Will he hoist himself out of depression to seal the past and face the present or will he lose himself in the bottom of the bottle?

This is the fourth and FINAL book of the Gay Erotic Romance “Obsessed”. It features explicit adult m/m content as well as romantic elements. Warning: mentions of illness and death.

Excerpt

Sex shouldn’t be so hard. People did it all the time. Hell, he and Gabe were proof that people fucked. By now though, he’d looked up too much information. That was the problem. He’d researched and researched. Looked up articles. Instructional videos. Diagrams. He wanted to be prepared, but he’d ended up scaring himself.

The doorbell rang, several times in quick succession. Gabe’s familiar pattern. Anxiety served as a cold shower to his erection, the bulge dying down. He shut the drawer, bouncing up like a jack-in-the-box.

He galloped down the stairs, grinning when he saw Gabe walk towards him, having let himself in. His backpack dangled from his shoulder, and he smiled widely. “Ready to work on homework?” he teased.

“Yeah. Sure.” Meik chuckled. He approached Gabe, meeting him at the bottom stairs. He took the backpack from his shoulder, letting it thud to the ground next to them. “We can work on our anatomy homework.”

Meik moved in to catch Gabe’s lips, but his kiss ended up skidding across those dark curls when Gabe tilted his head forward into Meik’s chest, sighing loudly. “You’re talking like we’re in a cheap porno. I don’t like it.” His whining was muffled. “I don’t even take anatomy.”

A snigger and Meik buried his nose in Gabe’s hair. “You kinda like it. Admit it.”

“Never gonna happen.” Gabe kept his giggles quiet, but his body shook against Meik’s.

Trickling his fingers along Gabe’s side, he snuck them under his shirt, touch light on the warm skin. “Admit it,” Meik lilted, tickling him.

Gabe squirmed, shaking his head. “No.” His laughter, still silent, made his entire body tremble.

“Not gonna stop until you admit you like my porn talk.” Meik enjoyed the way Gabe wiggled against him, hips pressing together. The erection that had died down started regaining strength until the weight of what he’d planned settled on him again. Would things change? Would they be the same? Would Gabe even want to sleep with him? Those same doubts had plagued him for the last couple of weeks.

“Meik! Stop!” Gabe shrieked in laughter, palming his chest and pushing him away. He was breathless, blotches of pink on his cheeks, tears clinging to his lashes.

“Fine, fine. Only ‘cause I like you though.” Meik held his hands up in surrender.

“You are the biggest dork. I don’t know why everyone at school thinks you’re cool.”

“I cultivate my image very carefully.”

“Oh, so I am the only one who knows the real you?” Gabe’s head quirked, hands fisting in Meik’s shirt.

It was an interesting question. A probing one. Meik didn’t know the answer himself. His brows drew together, and he shrugged. “Dunno. Maybe.”

“You’re supposed to say yes. It’s flattering and romantic.”

Meik leaned in, nipping at Gabe’s pout. “I mean...yes.”

“Better,” Gabe hummed.

Meik pressed their lips together. “Why don’t we...head up to my room?” The words came out with a hitch, surprisingly.

“Sure.” Gabe pulled away, snatching up his bag. “I brought those movies for us to watch.”

Gabe didn’t seem to have a clue what Meik planned. After all, they spent most weekends watching movies together.

Meik & Sebastian (Obsessed #4)Meik & Sebastian by Quin Perin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the last one of this series and don't worry about a happy ending. It has a happy ending.
Though it felt like a HEA, from what I read about Meik, it was a promise of a HEA.
Though this is actually Sebastian and Meik's story, Gabe's story outnumbered Sebastian in this installment. We finally got the story about Meik's backstory and why he's like that. Sure he's an a**hole for Sebastian, but sometimes, memories and hurt stays forever.

My only complain is that the ending wrapped up a bit rush, I though this book could be more satisfying if the authors add a few more chapters at the end, so we can get a complete story of Sebastian.
I admit, this one is a better part then the previous one, I don't hate Meik anymore :)

Pax Polo is the swashbuckling guitarist for Serenity Free.

Correction: Was the swashbuckling guitarist for Serenity Free.

Now he sports a black eye and his bros have kicked him out of their band—three weeks before Christmas. It’s an unfamiliar kick to his over-inflated ego, but . . . whatever.

No problem.

Thanks to some stellar eavesdropping, an unexpected angel ornament, and a bribe to open for his favorite band ever, Pax will weasel his way back into his mates’ good graces.

All he has to do is friend Clifford, the neighborhood man-shrew, for the summer. Distract him a bit so Clifford’s younger sister can sneak around.

It sounds like a piece of beginners Beethoven. Jolly good fun.

Easy.

Because, Pax totally knows how to friend people. He has heaps of friends. This shrew’s no match for his shrewd ways. Or is he?

In 1750, a master woodcarver poured all his unrequited love, passion, and longing into his masterpiece—a gorgeous Christmas angel for his beloved’s tree. Since then, the angel has been passed down, sold, lost and found, but its magic remains. Read the romances inspired by (and perhaps nudged along by) the Christmas angel through the years. A bit about me: I'm a big, BIG fan of slow-burn romances. I love to read and write stories with characters who slowly fall in love.

Some of my favorite tropes to read and write are: Enemies to Lovers, Friends to Lovers, Clueless Guys, Bisexual, Pansexual, Demisexual, Oblivious MCs, Everyone (Else) Can See It, Slow Burn, Love Has No Boundaries.

I write a variety of stories, Contemporary MM Romances with a good dollop of angst, Contemporary lighthearted MM Romances, and even a splash of fantasy.

My books have been translated into German, Italian, French, Spanish, and Thai.

“Just because I’m gay and you’re gay, doesn’t mean we should be gay together.” Pax rested his head back against Cliff’s shoulder. “No, but I’m a dick, and you’re a dick, and we both like dick, so . . .”

So...
it's kinda hard to write this.
I love Anyta's books, almost all of them. Sorry that this one didn't really work for me.
I like slow burn, enemy to lovers, friends to lovers and I love Anyta's books :(
I really wanted to love this book, but I can't. All my friends loved it, and I was trying to find out where did I go wrong with this.
I liked Pax, I like Cliff, but...
I liked the story premise, but...
I wanted to praise this book, but...
I wanted to enjoy this book, but...
I felt bored, and tired, and cannot wait to finished this book so I can start the new one.
I love the series, this was an okay, fun, adorable story, but not my favorite of Anyta and the series over all.
I'm sure this time, it's not the book, it's me. Because all my friends loved it, and I didn't :(

August 1939. Roger Miller and Jack O’Brien have been close since childhood. By the time they realize there’s more between them than friendship, Jack is leaving their sleepy Iowa town for college. But they console themselves knowing he’ll be home for Christmas. Right?

It is Christmas before they see each other again, but that Christmas comes six years and a world war later. Aged, beaten, and shaken by combat, they’re not the boys they were back then, but their feelings for each other are stronger than ever.

Neither know the words to say everything they’ve carried since that peacetime summer kiss, though. Even as they stand in the same room, there’s a thousand miles between them.

But maybe that’s some distance the little angel in Roger’s rucksack can cross.

This 24,000 word novella is part of the multi-author Christmas Angel series, and can be read as a standalone.

“For some reason every time I touched that angel or looked at it, I remembered that if I got through the war, then I might see you again. Sometimes… sometimes that was the only thing that kept me going.”

This is a very beautiful second chance romance from one of my favorites, LA Witt.
As we knew, back then, being gay was forbidden and even Jack and Roger didn't know that they're gay, they're just, 'people lile us'.
After six long years and realized being with women is never an option, the angel worked her magic to let Roger and Jack see what they need to see and feel what their heart desire and comfortable in their own skin. And just be who they are.

We’d both survived a war that had killed our friends all around us. We were two men who needed each other in a world that didn’t allow it I don’t care what we’re supposed to do.

War is never pretty, but the, back home with the family demanded you to get married and happy, when all you want is being with a man you loved. A man, not a woman.
They had to make a decision after all.
And the decision and choice is only one. Being with each other. Be true to what they are and who they are.
Jack and Roger with a help of the angel figurine, finally found their happiness.
And I'm happy.

I just know I’ve spent all these years scared to death I’d never see you again. Now that we’re here again, I don’t give a damn what anybody else thinks. I love you, I always have, and I’ll understand if we can’t be together...

I didn’t need something to shut out the fear and stave off the loneliness—I needed this man to know that I loved him, that I had always loved him, and that I couldn’t and wouldn’t stop loving him.

Such a gorgeous story, Lori wrote a beautiful historical romance that is hard to forget. And Roger and Jack will stay with me for a very long time.

Christmas PrinceChristmas Prince by R.J. Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a wonderful modern Cinderfella story, with a touch of a little ghost and some secret of the past. Marc and Raphael were opposite in everything, except their silly interest of one thing in the auction. And that was actually drove Raphael and Marc together in the first place. Their first meeting intrigued Raphael to get to know the fiery curator, and he wanted him. What Raphael want, Raphael get. He's a Prince after all. And a sneaky one.
I loved their chemistry, their same interest of one particular subject, and hearing the same 'ghost'.
Christmas Prince was an entertaining holiday story, and well written by RJ.
It's sweet, yes. Sugary sweet, yes. Adorable, yes. Cute and dreamy, yes. Besides, who doesn't want to have their own prince anyway?
Christmas Prince was enjoyable, light, no angst, and RJ wrapped it well with a guaranteed happy ending between Raphael and Marc.
What's not to love?

After the hard winter of 1888 ended Alby Boyle’s work as a Nebraska ranch hand, he returned to New York City in search of his long-lost family. His mother and brothers are nowhere to be found, however, and after Alby’s years of absence, Five Corners no longer feels like home. His prospects seem as dim as the nighttime alleys.

When Alby pauses to admire an angel ornament in a department store window’s Christmas display, he meets Xeno Varnham-Summerfield. Wealthy, handsome, and enthusiastic, Xeno brings Alby some temporary cheer. But for Alby to achieve his dreams of love and a real home, well, that may take a bit of holiday magic.

The Christmas Angel Series

In 1750, a master woodcarver poured all his unrequited love, passion, and longing into his masterpiece—a gorgeous Christmas angel for his beloved’s tree. When the man he loved tossed the angel away without a second thought, a miracle happened. The angel was found by another who brought the woodcarver True Love.

Since then, the angel has been passed down, sold, lost and found, but its magic remains. Read the romances inspired by (and perhaps nudged along by) the Christmas angel through the years. Whether it’s 1700s England (Eli Easton's Christmas Angel), the 1880’s New York (Kim Fielding’s Summerfield’s Angel), the turn-of-the-century (Jordan L. Hawk’s Magician’s Angel), World War II (L.A. Witt’s Christmas Homecoming), Vietnam-era (N.R. Walker’s Soldier’s Wish), the 1990’s (Anyta Sunday’s Shrewd Angel), or 2018 (RJ Scott’s Christmas Prince), the Christmas angel has a way of landing on the trees of lonely men who need its blessing for a very Merry Christmas and forever HEA.

Author Bio

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.
Kim’s novel Brute was the 2013 Rainbow Award Winner for Best Gay Fantasy and tied for fourth place for Best Gay Novel.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

Summerfield's Angel (The Christmas Angel, #2)Summerfield's Angel by Kim Fielding
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a beautiful story about finding your root and on the way, finding your love.
Sweet, poetic, and very much Kim Fielding writing style.
The story was almost dreamy, like you were living in that day, and felt the situation. You know, how some books swallow you inside and lived in that. I was there watching Alby and Xeno finding out that, even in the wild 'east', on that era, there were some people who care about their 'partnership', as Xeno's father called it.
But not without any miracles from the angel display on Xeno's store.
This was Christmas after all, magical things happened.
Summerfield's angel was an entertaining, sweet, and like I said earlier, a dreamy romance. Low angst and a promise of a great future, this book will bring you to the earlier years of New York and people who lived there, and of course, romance!
I enjoyed this book, and you should too!

The year is 1969…

Gary Fairchild is proud to be a hippie college student, and he protests the Vietnam War because he believes in love and peace. To him, it isn’t just a counterculture movement—it’s a way of life. When tickets to the Aquarium Exposition—3 Days of Peace & Music, or Woodstock, as it was better known, go on sale, there’s no way he isn’t going.

Richard Ronsman is a sheltered farm boy who lives in the shadow of his overbearing father. He’s hidden his darkest secret to earn his father’s love, but nothing is ever good enough—not even volunteering for the Vietnam War. And with just a few days left before he’s deployed, he’s invited by a striking hippie to join him at a music festival.

Three days of music, drugs, rain, mud, and love forged a bond between these two very different men that would shape the rest of their lives. They share dreams and fears, and when Richard is shipped off to war, they share letters and love. For Richard’s first Christmas home, he is gifted a special angel ornament that just might make a soldier’s wish come true.

This story is one of seven stories which can all be read and enjoyed in any order.

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things...but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since...

 A Soldier's WishA Soldier's Wish by N.R. Walker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Soldier's Wish has easily become my favorite holiday story. This book is part of Christmas Angel series from various favorite authors of mine. Go check the whole books!
The year of 1969 was a traumatic year for most American boys, Vietnam war had started and it was so sad that Richard, barely a man had to go there just to prove to his father that he's a man, not a sissy boy. Then Woodstock happened after he agreed to a stranger's invitation to go there. The stranger, Gary, had become a center of his life after that.

This book is bittersweet romance between two gay man in the year when being gay was forbidden and an abominable.
They had to be very careful, and thank God for Gary's best friend Kat, being a beard all the time. I think, she's the real angel in Gary and Richard's life, beside the angel garland that given to Richard for Christmas.

NR Walker, once again, successfully made me cry and sighing happily for the love they shared. I loved the strong chemistry between Gary and Richard, right from the moment Gary saw Richard across the diner table that day.
War is never good, war always left pain, and hurt and trauma. But then, Richard got Gary and Kat and the angel to protect him, even from his homophobic family.
I loved this book passionately, I'm sure this is going to be my repeat order book to read for holiday season, or not. Because, gosh...this is so beautifully written, and could recommend you enough to read this book.

NR Walker nailed it with the historical effect, and the happy ending was really awesome! One of the best holiday story ever!
Read this book!
